You've never made a cosplay have you?

Materials, patterns, and time add up. Big time. An easy cosplay at the lower end of things can easily cost around 50-70 dollars, more if you need props.
If more elaborate material like pleather, I understand.

But for the Takeru costume is just plain fabric. 1 yard of plain cotton cloth costs probably 3 USD only.

My mom was a tailor and she makes costumes for pre-school dancing troupes. Usually she bought satin, and a yard of cheap satin costs about USD 1.50 only. More expensive ones are only USD 5-6 per yard only.

Standard school uniform (cotton shirt + long pants) here sells for about USD 20-25 per suit. That cosplay suits sells for USD 80. It's reasonable if it's custom made, and if he/she personally takes your measurement.

The cheapest fabric you can get where I am is around 6.99 a yard (not counting sales). Then again, I go through lengths to try and use the right fabric for the character, so those can get to be around 14-27 dollars a yard (though I usually use coupons or get it on sale so it's not too bad).

Cloth is cheaper in Indochina, Futa. That's a fact.

So is custom tailoring.

I watched Top Gear.

No wonder. But most of the costumes come from Hong Kong, Guangzhou or other parts of China... I believe cloth should be even cheaper there.

I said INDOCHINA.

I doubt with China. One, they're trying to make a shitload of money off of foreigners. Second, while things from China are cheap here in the US, nothing seems cheap in China itself. ;v; I get confused over them pork prices even. So, bulk cloth for like mass-production for export, yeah, cheap. But individuals buying cloth within China? Probably more expensive than in the States.

My mom makes a lot of my clothes, and she used to always hunt down the $1 per yard stuff at Walmart. Albeit, they are cheap and sometimes have poor designs dyed/printed, but my mom always choose decent quality stuff to make durable clothes out of. But, now that I think about it, it's been at least five years since she's even able to find any clearance cloth for like less than 2 dollars. And that's just clearange stuff. My mom stays away from the regular priced stuff, because it's just way too high.

blade didn't understand most of it, but he at least got the base concept. He gets the feeling these were made for chemistry people.

Still pretty awesome.
Yes, it was made for chemistry people.

But more for the organic chem people.

Most of the chemical used were organic compounds (everything except for sodium acetate and hydrogen peroxide), which is why you are required to use an organic base, since a large portion of organic compounds do not dissolve in water (hydrophobic).
