Okay, after playing Ocarina of time, I have some thoughts on the 3D Legend of Zelda series. Seeing as I can't post this as a status I shall use a note. This is just a first draft. The odds are pretty good it will also be the final draft.

Legend of Zelda is a great series, it's gathered many fans, and even those that haven't even played the games can still recognize Link. The first game is partially responsible for resurrecting video games from the video game crash of the 80s. It's also one of the few series that has survived a jump from 2D to 3D without the game quality suffering in any way, however the jump to 3D has had one unintended side effect. Ever since Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask the 3D series has stagnated. It's made no headway as a game. The series gameplay has failed to evolve.

Gameplay in games is important, because no matter how good the story is if the gameplay isn't fun people won't want to play it. When they designed the 3D Legend of Zelda games they struck gold, the formula worked in a way that was fun and that didn't get old. Rather than try to improve this formula they decided to just keep on reusing it rather than improve upon it they just add a gimmick to each game. Ocarina has switching between a young and old Link using time travel, Majora's Mask has the masks, Wind Waker, Phantom Hourglass, and Spirit Tracks have unique ways of travel, and Twilight Princes has Wolf Link. It hasn't changed one bit since Ocarina of Time, each element of Ocarina of Time just gets reused in each sequel, sometimes unchanged, sometimes tweaked, but never anything new worth noting. Still, there are some exceptions. Both Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks use a top down system closer to the top down 2D Zelda games while still using elements from the 3D over the shoulder games. The as of yet to be released Skyward Sword changes swordplay to be more precise by using the Wii Motion plus, which will change the old sword combat system up slightly. While Phantom Hourglass and it's sequel changed things up a bit, the rest still relied completely on the old system. Why not switch it up?

There are many things they could do to make a LoZ game that pushes the envelope a little. Maybe make a game where you can play as Sheik as she helps Link on his quest during Ocarina of Time? It would allow for a completely different combat system while still keeping the Legend of Zelda feel to it. They could have Link learn different combat styles that work better against certain enemies. It would make combat a whole lot more interesting. There are things that could be done, but they haven't done them.

As a popular game series grows, it should evolve, it should change slightly as it ages. Somehow Nintendo hit on a formula in Ocarina of Time that doesn't seem to age. This is both good and bad. Good, as it allows Nintendo to make large amounts of money off it and gamers have fun games to explore. Bad, as gamers are denied a game that could become more, as Nintendo doesn't want to try something new and accidentally kill off their cash cow (which they could easily resurrect through rereleasing another remake). They've made a killer series, one that I wish could become so much more.
