Um.
1991 Mercedes 560SEL - rebuilt title
1992 Toyota Corolla
1995 Ford F-250 (I'm guessing on the year for this one.)
1996 Toyota Land Cruiser (Again, guessing on the year. It's somewhere around 94 95 96 ish. Definitely not 93 or 97. And the Cruiser should be newer than the truck.)
1999 Toyota Corolla - has visible accident damage
2002 BMW Z-3

+ 1990 Mercedes 560SEL that kind of got totaled nearly a year ago, but we still have it in the garage.
Shit. Why do we have two Corollas and two 560SELs. Like. what.
Rich family...

So we're looking at a Mercedes and Toyota at nearly over 20 years old. Merc has a rebuild title from an accident by the previous owner. Brother has the older Corolla right now, which is running fine.

A Ford pick-up and a Toyota SUV at over 15. Ford is physically falling apart. The Toy Cruiser is running strong however.

A green Corolla that was the newest car in the lot, until my dad bought the Z3... has damage from previous owner. Hugeass dent on its driver's side rear door.

Z3 is in good condition.
Wait... All your cars are pre-owned?

Then again, my family hasn't traded in a car since I was a toddler. We basically started this, drive until it's dead thing.

So... it's kind of hard when none of them dies. Heck, the 1990 Merc was in excellent condition other than some oil burning issues before my brother took it down a ditch.

Funny enough. Other than the Toy Cruiser, all of them were purchased for under 3 grand, if I recall correctly.

All of them were bought used.

My dad, my brother, and I kind... of like our cars.

My entire family is also a bunch of cheapskates. My brother was tempted to buy a new Ford Focus back in 07 or something.

Ended up not because it was too "expensive". <<;

Why? Not worth the money?
A new car loses about half its value the moment you drive it off the lot.

Plus.

If there are any issues with new cars, you have to deal with them, even with the warranty and shit.

So, my dad's like, wait until someone else deals with it. And get a discount while you're at it.

Sure, often times, we have to put in some extra cash to fix small problems from previous owners' lack of care. But usually those are small.

Most of the time, it's just fixing shit that falls apart from age and mileage.

Basically let others "ride out the major problems" with new cars.

With something fresh off the assembly line, especially a new generation, nobody knows what the fuck is going to explode in the car.

...my dad rather just deal with little things he can do himself.

We have to consider you're in Malaysia.

Where the car prices are jacked up more so than in the US.

So while you can get 1000 bucks for yours in Malaysia.

Who knows how much you get here.

tl;dr my family has more cars than drivers.

and yet there was still one day when my mom was forced to drive the pick-up truck (last choice for daily commuter) to work because the cars she tried didn't work. <<; i forgot exactly what happened. but her usual daily commuter (92 corolla) didn't start up. Dunno if she tried another car. But then went to try the Toy Cruiser, whose battery was dead because we only drive it like 3 times a year (haha, why it's in good condition still). and like, she ended up with like one car left, the ford pick-up, and drove that to work... much to my dad's surprise.

so there's upsides and downsides to my family's collection of cars.

yes, when everything is running well, we have way more cars than necessary by most standards.

but when shit gets down, it's actually nice to have that back-up.

But hoenstly, if you consider the list. The Ford pick-up is only for when it needs to be used (you kind of don't want to know what sort of torture my dad puts that thing through). Same with the Toy Cruiser (choice as a people carrier plus winter driving).

That leaves four cars for four drivers.

My dad drives the Merc as a daily commuter.

My mom drives a Corolla.
My brother drives a Corolla down in the Carolinas. (They recently switched, so go figures.)

And when I'm at home, I'm pretty much stuck with driving the Z3. (which i did over the summer to go to my summer class)

Or you can do what my brother does and just buy a car piece by piece and assemble it. Dear God his Jeep is going to be terrifying once he's done.

Yeah, nobody has the time for that.

We barely have the time to keep up maintenance on all of the old piles of metal.
