I looked up the manga, and it has Ecchi as one of the genre's. How much Ecchi? And is it overbearing, or trying too hard that it takes away from the story, or seems out of place?

Not much ecchi that I remember. Definitely doesn't detract from the plot, at least not on the level of something like History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi.
