LOL. Is it cheating that you showed me this pic a while ago, and i THINK you told me the show? Does that mean I cant say it? I wont if you say so...
LOL! I remember this animated version they made of this... They called it Journey to the West and it aired on Fox Kids early Saturday mornings... I think it aired at like 7am... I used to love that show...
Anyways this one is called Saiyuki Reload and since you said you wanted the specific series I"m going to go with the very first one, Burial.

And ya, it wasn't Saiyuuki, it was a different version with the actual Monley King Son Goku himself. It was kind of like Dragonball Z only Son Goku was an actual monkey... He had this Power Pole... umm... I seem to recall something about the gods burying him neck high in the earth, or something like that... Umm... Oh ya and there was the headband, can't forget that. Didn't that limit his powers or something...?
