Try doing some exercises that will get you used to using one? http://mark.dustyghost.com/tutorials/graphics-tablet-making-the-change/ There was this other one. Basically practice with basic shapes until you get a hang of doing basic stuff. Then scribble away.

I know people who are insanely neat and fast at using a tablet, but that's after significant usage to get that good at it.

^ Neatness is a factor. Patience is really necessary to make neat stuff with drawing tablets. (Left is stuff on my old tablet. Right is stuff on my roommate's tablet. If you pay attention to the hair, you can see the differences in neatness, or well, control of the strokes.)

Ahh. They're not hard to learn, but they do take time to get a hang of the hand-eye coordination. Until Dec 2012, my art tablet was one of those draw-on-the-screen types, so I never had an issue. But that kind of kicked the bucket (plans for revival are in order). So for the past semester...
