    The first point is true. Replacement parts for German cars are fucking expensive. Not going to lie about that. But the good thing is that the expensive stuff rarely breaks. So, if you do buy parts, it's usually the cheap stuff. (It also helps that with the Merc we own, there's two of them, one...

    Yeah, nobody has the time for that. We barely have the time to keep up maintenance on all of the old piles of metal.

    But hoenstly, if you consider the list. The Ford pick-up is only for when it needs to be used (you kind of don't want to know what sort of torture my dad puts that thing through). Same with the Toy Cruiser (choice as a people carrier plus winter driving). That leaves four cars for four drivers...

    so there's upsides and downsides to my family's collection of cars. yes, when everything is running well, we have way more cars than necessary by most standards. but when shit gets down, it's actually nice to have that back-up.

    tl;dr my family has more cars than drivers. and yet there was still one day when my mom was forced to drive the pick-up truck (last choice for daily commuter) to work because the cars she tried didn't work. <<; i forgot exactly what happened. but her usual daily commuter (92 corolla) didn't...

    Basically let others "ride out the major problems" with new cars. With something fresh off the assembly line, especially a new generation, nobody knows what the fuck is going to explode in the car. ...my dad rather just deal with little things he can do himself.

    Sorry, I killed Pages

    A new car loses about half its value the moment you drive it off the lot. Plus. If there are any issues with new cars, you have to deal with them, even with the warranty and shit. So, my dad's like, wait until someone else deals with it. And get a discount while you're at it. Sure, often...

    My entire family is also a bunch of cheapskates. My brother was tempted to buy a new Ford Focus back in 07 or something. Ended up not because it was too "expensive". <<;

    Sorry, I killed Pages

    Funny enough. Other than the Toy Cruiser, all of them were purchased for under 3 grand, if I recall correctly. All of them were bought used. My dad, my brother, and I kind... of like our cars.
