Susei no Gargantia feels like a Studio Ghibli anime.

Which series you like more depends on the relevancy to your interests. They are both really good. Also, I'm trying not to get too involved with the characters in Gargantia because I know that Urobutcher is probably going to kill them off at some point. I'm also failing miserably at doing so.

Also, I am 5 minutes into Valvrave. So, seeing how this is happy right now, and the main character has no actual motivation for any fighting, how long until the girl dies?

Also, Susei no Gargantia is great. Except it's written by the guy who wrote Madoka and Psycho-Pass, so I'm assuming that the characters are going to die horrible deaths.
